This review is from: HP Photosmart C410a Premium Fax Wireless e-All-in-One (CQ521A#B1H) (Office Product)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?) Arrival:

When the printer arrived, I have to admit that I was worried. The shipping box was pretty well battered, on corner and side totally crushed. I couldn't hear anything rattling around inside, but still, I wasn't looking forward to looking inside the box. My fears were unfounded though. The shipping box took most of the damage while the printer box itself had minimal crushing. The foam used to protect the printer in its box did its job perfectly, with not a single scratch on the printer itself. After a full inspection, I found nothing but the foam had sustained damage.
Inside the box along with the printer was a full compliment of printer ink cartridges, a zip up bag with cables, and even a carry all bag for the printer itself. I'm not sure how many folks would carry around a printer like this in a bag, but, it was a nice touch. The only thing that bugged me was the lack of a USB cable. I do a lot of PC work on the side, and in my experience, a USB cable was usually needed in order to get HP wifi enabled printers up and running on the network.

    Setup:

Following the included instructions, I had the printer up and running on our network in less than 10 minutes. (Most of the 10 minutes was waiting for Vista to load drivers and taking off the protective masking/tape.) Pretty much, just plug it in and follow the onscreen instructions. The C410a found our home network easily, quickly, and without that USB cable I'd been bothered about. The onscreen instructions and demo movies for setup were spot on and easy to understand. If one misses an instruction, there is an option to repeat it. All well and good, and I was quite impressed with it compared to HP units I'd worked with less than a month ago. The included driver/software CD allowed me to quickly install the C410a XP, Vista, and Win7 without no fuss.

    Usage:

Prior to getting the C410a, we were using an Epson RX600 all-in-one and were quite happy with it. Feature wise, the only item missing from the C410a that I noticed was the ability to scan in slide and negatives. Not a huge deal, unless you're wanting to convert you old film and slides to digital. Other than that, the C410a blows the Epson out of the water for features. Double-sided printing and copying, built-in wifi, dual purpose paper tray (holds both 4x6 photo paper and 8.5x11 standard sheets), built-in apps, fax, and ePrint functions.

The one feature I really got into was the ePrint function. I noted the claim that the C410a could print from any smartphone, which caught my attention. Printing from my iPhone, (yeah yeah, not a *real* smartphone), was problematic at best, a total no-show at worst. The way HP gets around dissimilar smartphones was to assign each printer an email address. When you sign up for the ePrint (free), you're given the email address for your printer. After that, just email whatever you want to print to the C410a. As long as the item is attached to the email, the C410a prints it. If you send it an email that has both text and an attachment, the C410a will print both the email and the attachment individually. When the C410a gets the email, it determines which paper should be used based on the object. For example, it printed the email itself on plain paper but printed the photo that was attached to the email on the 4x6 photo paper. If one sends an email with multiple attachments, each attachment will get printed. For my part, I printed pictures and emails. I haven't yet tried PDFs, DOCs, or any other common document format. One also gets an email confirmation to let you know your email was received and printing is a go. It worked pretty well, and I had some fun sending various things to the spouse as surprises (they sit next to the printer). Lag between sending and printing was minimal, maybe 1-2 min max.
By `worked pretty well' I mean the service did have some issues. Over the course of a week, a few emails got lost (never printed, but confirmation email arrived), and 4 out of 21 pictures were not printed correctly. The pictures in question printed correctly when sent a second time. The printing problems exhibited were discolored portions of the photo (half the photo would be lighter than the other half, with an obvious line of separation), partially printed photo (photo printed about a quarter of the way through and then turned to nothing but gray for the rest), and misaligned photos (photo looked like it had been cut into two parts and not put back together correctly due to an obvious shift up or down in the picture subject).
I didn't dig into the other features a whole lot, but dabbled with each. So far, so good, but a tad confusing here and there. Eventually we will get around to trying out the fax and duplex printing/scanning/copying functions and update this review.
One interesting feature are the apps loaded on the machine. Through the internet connected to the printer, there are some game apps, and some web apps like MSNBC and Yahoo, as well as some kids sites. You can easily pull these up and print directly from the site preloaded pages of Sudoku, coloring pages, top news stories, etc. You can also install more apps. It is a pretty nifty feature, and I was able to print a page of Sudoku in about 30 seconds, and the top news stories easily as well.
Ink usage wasn't a real happy subject. We printed a total of 67 pages, 21 of which were borderless color 4x6 photo, 10 were 8 1/2 x 11 photos, and 36 were regular text documents, some of which had a bit of color, before we were dead in the water for ink. Both the Cyan and Yellow were depleted, Magenta 2/3rds gone, Photo and Black a quarter gone each. At ~$25 a pop for ink carts, we are going to be out $50 with less than 100 pages printed. It might be just me, but I would think that carts would last a bit longer than that.

Speaking of ink, we tested the ink out on multiple types of photo paper. My general rule of thumb is to use the same brand photo paper as the printer. After all, it would make sense for them to formulate their ink to match their paper and vice versa. Interestingly, all the photos we printed came out the same in appearance. However, I noted that the ink didn't smear when some moisture (spit) was lightly rubbed on the HP paper, though it did on the Epson and Kodak premium paper we had around the house.

    Bottom Line:

Overall, we really like the C410a, even with its hiccups. Perhaps a firmware update at a later time will fix up some of the issues we noted. The color ink consumption was pretty nasty, which is something we will be keeping an eye on, but honestly we don't print photos on a regular basis. While I would have liked to have had the ability to scan in negatives and slides, the C410a does pack on enough other features that I can forgive this.
