This review is from: Beats Solo Hi-Def Headphones with ControlTalk (Red) (Electronics)
After having listened to the Beats Studio previously I was expecting this to be relatively expensive (vs competitors) but figured that they'd at least provide fairly good sound like the Studio. But after testing these with several genres of music on the Solo HD I was surprised to find sound quality that's easily exceeded by many much, much, cheaper headphones that cost under $50. I own probably way too many headphones, ranging across a price range that goes from $2.99 to hundreds of dollars so I'm not being an audio snob here and only comparing these against super high end headphones, but the sound out of these is easily beaten in richness and detail by virtually all the headphones I own, including several $30-50 headphones.
I'll admit that they look fairly snazzy (obviously this is subjective) and at least a little bit of money gets donated for the Red versions but it honestly makes way more sense to buy a good $30 headphone and then donate the difference to charity.
If you're considering buying these I definitely have to suggest that you bring your audio/mp3 player with you to a regular store and test out the headphones in person (instead of just using their demo tracks). If possible, bring along a couple of good $30-$50 headphones to compare with before you invest the kind of money they're asking for these headphones. The Solo HD attempts to be bass heavy but people who like bass would probably be better off with a DJ headphone like the Sennheiser HD212's (discontinued though sometimes still available though at a noticeable markup) or the more portable Koss PortaPros. For more all-around sound something like the JVC HARX700 or HARX900 would likely save a lot of people quite a bit of money. Definitely listen to a few other headphones before making up your mind.
