This review is from: Dell Inspiron iM1012-687OBK 10.1-Inch Netbook (Obsidian Black) (Personal Computers)
I'm on my third day with the Dell 1012 netbook, and just finishing running the first charge of the battery down. My initial thoughts:
Style - Not bad. The glossy cover already looks messy, but the keyboard and 'carbon-fiber look' palm rests look great. Even though this has a little bigger footprint than I would like, I do like the fact that the case sticks out behind the monitor hinge. Not only is this very stable even on my lap, but I use the extension as a handle making it easy and safe to carry while open. The rest of the style is clean and neat.
Use - the screen is very clear and bright and the keyboard has a decent feel. The size and layout will take some getting used to, but I think it is good. The touch pad is really easy to use, but getting used to the left/right buttons. I've had no problem with touching it while typing. One of the USB ports is very tight (hard to get stuff in/out). Still on my first battery run, but looks like I'm going to get over 7 hours with lots of use (setup, installing over 30 windows updates, watching France/Mexico world cup match). Overall this thing feels very sturdy.
Windows 7 starter - Not bad so far. Seems like some of the 'features' are less logical the previous versions of windows, and some of the restrictions seem to be arbitrary (such as not able to customize background). Need to figure out how to keep the stupid Live Messenger from starting at all. No longer pops up, but still shows on task bar. It was causing a little issue at shutdown (waiting for application to close). I'll know more after I put some basic apps on it.
Performance - About what I would expect. The first thing I did was uninstall the included McAfee and install Microsoft Security Essentials. Easy and seems much quicker boot and generally faster. There is still bloatware on here to clean off, but have to figure out what I need.
Overall really like it. The only things keeping it from 5 stars are some of the Windows 7 restrictions that are not necessary and the bloatware related stuff that they stuck on here.
